Brantley Lady Bulldogs win ‘Gulf Coast Classic’

The Brantley Lady Bulldogs traveled to Gulf Shores last week to compete in the prestigious ‘Gulf Coast Classic’ softball tournament and posted nine in three days to up their record to 33-2 and claim the tournament title.
The Lady Bulldogs, the three-time defending state champs in Class 1A, outscored their victims by a combined score of 71-2 in the 38-team event, and posted wins over teams ranked in the top ten in Class 5A and Class 6A.
The Lady Bulldogs opened tournament action on Monday with a lopsided 22-0 win over Shades Mountain Christian. Brantley scored 17 runs in the first inning to take command and coasted in with the easy win. Lainey Wells had 3 hits and 3 rbi’s to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Anna Kimbro and Olivia Jones both added 3 hits, and Alex Wilcox had 3 rbi’s. Lauren Hudson pitched a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts to get the win inside the circle.
The Lady Bulldogs returned to the field Monday in pool play and posted a 7-0 win over John Carroll Catholic. Brantley jumped ahead 3-0 in the opening inning and never looked back to grab its second win of the day. Emory Bush had 3 hits and 2 rbi’s to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Olivia Jones added 3 rbi’s. Leanna Johnson was the winning pitcher as she tossed a five-inning one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs returned to action in pool play on Tuesday and rolled to a solid 10-0 win over Clay-Chalkville. Brantley scored six runs in its final at-bat to pull away and post the win. Anna Kimbro had 2 hits and 3 rbi’s to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Alex Wilcox added 2 hits and Lainey Wells had 2 rbi’s. Leanna Johnson pitched a four-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts to get the win inside the circle.
The Lady Bulldogs closed pool play action on Tuesday with an impressive 16-1 win over Cherokee to win its pool. Brantley exploded for 11 runs in the opening inning and rolled to the big win. Emory Bush had 3 hits and 2 rbi’s to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Alex Wilcox and Kassidy Wilcox both added 2 hits and 2 rbi’s. Lauren Hudson pitched a three-inning two-hitter with six strikeouts to get the win inside the circle.
The Lady Bulldogs opened elimination play on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Fort Payne. Brantley scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning and made it hold up to claim the win. Alex Wilcox had 2 hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Anna Kimbro added 2 rbi’s and Hannah Sims had 1 rbi. Leanna Johnson was the winning pitcher as she tossed a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs next ran into 5A third-ranked Alexandria and edged out an exciting 1-0 win. Brantley scored the only run of the game in the second inning and held on to claim the win. Anna Kimbro and Kassidy Wilcox both had 1 hit to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Olivia Jones had the game-winning rbi. Leanna Johnson tossed a six-inning two-hitter with seven strikeouts to get the win inside the circle.
The Lady Bulldogs tangled with 6A ninth-ranked Northview in their next game and rolled to a big 7-1 win. Brantley scored six runs in the top of the fourth to break open a close game and grab the win. Alex Wilcox had 2 hits and 2 rbi’s to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Anna Kimbro added 1 hit and 1 rbi, Emory Bush added 1 hit and Lainey Wells added an rbi. Leanna Johnson was the winning pitcher as she tossed a four-inning one-hitter with five strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs next ran into 6A top-ranked Oxford and advanced to the tourney finals with a solid 2-0 win. Brantley scored both of its runs in the fourth inning and made it count to claim the win. Alex Wilcox had 1 hit to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Hannah Sims and Olivia Jones both had 1 rbi. Leanna Johnson was the winning pitcher as she tossed a five-inning two-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs etched their name on the championship trophy with a 3-0 win over 6A seventh-ranked Austin. Brantley jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back to win the tournament title. Kassidy Wilcox had 2 hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, while Alex Wilcox added 1 hit and 1 rbi, and Hannah Sims and Olivia Jones both had 1 rbi. Leanna Johnson was the winning pitcher as she tossed a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts.
